Akal Academy Surrey will host FUNDRAISER ON JUNE 15
The Akal University Fundraising Dinner takes place on Saturday, June 15 at Surrey’s Grand Taj Banquet Hall. The university’s construction is progressing at an impressive pace with four of the eight blocks completed. The first phase is slated to open in July 2014.The event will be held in the main hall from 6 to 9 p.m. People will enjoy performances by students of the Akal Academy and a documentary film outlining the many endeavours that society has undertaken. There will be guest speakers including local and international dignitaries who will be speaking on the importance of education along with their own personal experiences. It is sure to be a meaningful and enjoyable evening.
The fundraising program has been put together with the objective of raising funds for The Akal University Guru Kanshi. The Kalgidhar Society is establishing an International Center for Comparative Religious Studies. One major aspect will be the college of comparative study of religions with the objective of translating the Gurbani into various major languages of the world in the form of hymns so that as people can sing the Gurbani in the Guru Granth Sahib in the form of kirtan in their own way. In addition, The University will develop collaborative academic programs with domestic and foreign universities for new and novel technologies and co-operative programs with local, national and international industries, as well as develop training programs to fulfill the manpower needs of Punjabi, Indian, and international corporations.
The Kalgidhar Society spends millions of dollars on education, healthcare, social welfare and rehabilitation. The Society has been working tirelessly to fulfill its mission of providing support and resources to those in need. Currently, The Kalgidhar Society is operating and funding 129 Akal Academies including one in Surrey, BC and one University, one charitable hospital, 3 De-Addiction Centres. The Society has taken the initiative to start the Akal Child Welfare Foundation; an orphanage that provides boarding, lodging, health care and free education at Baru Sahib. There is also the Akal Home for Elderly & Widowed, The Akal Rural Upliftment Programme and the Akal Teacher’s Training College. All of these humanitarian projects and endeavours are non-profit with the goal of working towards the betterment of all humanity.
With the amazing success of the Akal Academy institutions, people started imploring the TheKalgidhar Society to start another university. So the Society decided that when they opened another university it would be located at a place known as Damdama Sahib and that is also known as Guru Kanshi because the tenth Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji, after fighting the cruelties and various excesses of the government of that time – the last battle was fought at Muktsar – came to this place where he rested for nine months. Here he dictated the Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji afresh and also added the Gurbani of Guru TeghBahadur Ji, the ninth Guru. The scriptures were written by Bhai Mani Singh as Guru Gobind Singh ji dictated. He threw the kalams or pens used in the sarovar and declared that this place would be like Banaras [Varanasi], which was the centre of education at the time. He said this would be Guru Kanshi.
“That is why there was keenness among all people that we should see this flourishing as an educational centre. So The Kalgidhar Trust decided that they will open a university at this place on the demand of the people. The foundation stone of the Akal University was laid in December 2011 & construction started in July 2012.
